of George Vary, Executive Director of the American Zinc Association as he discusses the recent Copenhagen Consensus and the benefits of zinc to health.
Cochrane Researchers have found that zinc supplementation benefits children suffering from diarrhea in developing countries, but only in infants over six months old. Their study supports World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the treatment of diarrhea with zinc, although not in the very young.
In 2008, the Copenhagen Consensus, a panel of 8 leading economists including 5 Nobel Laureates, determined that malnutrition in children was the top global problem that could be addressed in a cost-effective way with Vitamin A and Zinc supplementation.
The new Lancet's Nutrition Series conclude that zinc deficiency together with vitamin A deficiency have by far the largest remaining disease burden among the micronutrients considered. Visit website on The Lancet’s Nutrition Series
WHO guidelines on diarrhea treatment now include zinc supplementation. View WHO/UNICEF joint statement.
National stunting rate indicates risk of zinc deficiency: The risk of zinc deficiency can be estimated based on existing values for the national prevalence of stunting in pre-school children. View world map of nutritional stunting rate.
